Dave Grohl On Recording Nevermind

Nirvana's Nevermind was recorded in two studios: Sound City in California, and Smart Studios in Wisconsin. The former studio is already the subject of a documentary, the Dave Grohl-directed Sound City, and now the latter has a documentary of its own, too.

The Smart Studios Story will make its world premiere on Wednesday at the South By Southwest festival.

As a preview for the film, you can watch a clip of The Smart Studios Story, featuring Grohl talking about recording Nevermind, now at Billboard.com.

Nevermind producer Butch Vig founded Smart Studios in 1983 with his Garbage band mate Steve Marker.

"When I went to make [Nevermind] I had no idea it was going to profoundly change my life," Vig tells Billboard. "None of us had any idea. I think those sessions were fun because none of us had any expectations."

Smart Studios closed in 2010. During its run, bands including The Smashing Pumpkins, Fall Out Boy and Death Cab for Cutie also recorded albums there.
