Zayn Malik Reveals The Reason Behind His Eating Disorder
Months after revealing that he suffered from crippling anxiety and had developed an eating disorder during his time in One Direction, Zayn Malik has opened up even further about his mental health struggles.
In an interview with The Sunday Times' Style magazine, the 24-year-old talked about how hard it was, as a man, to admit to having emotional problems.
"People saw strength in that, and they didn't seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy," Zayn said. "We're all human.
"People are often afraid to admit difficulties, but I don't believe that there should be a struggle with anything that's the truth.
"If you were a guy, you used to have to be really masculine, but now expressing emotion is accepted and respected."
The I Don't Wanna Live singer also spoke candidly about his eating disorder, which, he said, came about because of the pressure he faced while in One Direction.
"Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled, it was the one area where I could say, 'No, I'm not eating that'," he continued.
Zayn's girlfriend Gigi Hadid has publicly supported her singer boyfriend through his mental health battle, taking to Instagram to praise him for his "bravery".
"I've seen the battles you go through and the way you fight to get to a place that allows you to get up there for your fans," she wrote after Zayn pulled out of the Capital Summertime Ball an hour-and-a-half before he was due on stage.
"Your bravery in those times makes me proud, but your honesty last night proved what you're all about, being real."
