Reason behind *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys rivalry revealed

There were two kinds of people back in the '90s: Backstreet Boys fans and *NSYNC fans.

The rivalry between the competing boy bands created a deep divide between fandoms, but not many people really know why the rivalry even began.

Now, 20 years later, we finally have some answers. Hallelujah!

In an interview with Billboard, *NSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick described the boy band rivalry as boiling down to, wait for it, a girl.

“I wanted to punch AJ’s [McLean] lights out for a little while. I was dating a girl, I broke up with her and he started dating her,” *NSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick said.

“And I guess he was talking smack to her about me, so I confronted him on it and wanted to kick his ass.”

Thankfully, Kirkpatrick decided to let go of his grudge against McLean — though he doesn’t know why.

“I don’t know how it got resolved — I saw him out one night and said I wanted to kill him, but I said, ‘Let’s get a beer,’” he said.

“I think boy band fights are in the same realm as hockey fights. You fight when you’re on TV, but then when you’re not, you get a beer together. Now we’re really good friends.”

As for the musical feud between the iconic boy bands, *NSYNC considered it “friendly competition” — not a fierce rivalry.

Phew! Like they say, 'All is well that ends well'.
